Dahlicious day at Little Parndon
Posted: 29th September 2017Book-lovers had a wonderfully Dahlicious day to kick-start a new term.
Pupils at Little Parndon Primary Academy dressed as their favourite Roald Dahl character as part of Roald Dahl Day.
The school restaurant even had a special menu following the theme which included Twits Beard Whiskers (gammon with noodles) served with Pickled Spines of Porcupines (rice).
The day is the latest inspirational event held each term to get pupils excited for the topics and lessons ahead.
Surprised pupils have previously arrived at school to discover a sink hole in the hall – a 3D interactive art installation – the Borrowers set up home and a giant egg appeared in the field to capture their attention and imaginations. They also held a WWII day where pupils dressed in costumes and attended their own D Day party.
Kirstie Clark, head of school, said: “These events are such a great way to inspire and motivate our children. They can see that learning is fun and that it isn’t just a focus on English and maths. Our themes run throughout every aspect of the curriculum and cater for all learners and their strengths.”
The latest event focused on a visit from the BFG who left behind various giant belongings for pupils to investigate.
Mrs Clark said: “Reading is a key focus for the school so having a day dedicated to such a fantastic author with each class reading one of his classic books will bring excitement into reading and encourage the children to want to read for pleasure. We find even those who are reluctant to read suddenly want to because they are dressed up and enthusiastic from the activity.”
Pupils wrote out their hopes and dreams for the year ahead and locked them away in glass jars to be added to through the year and opened next summer.
