22,000 batteries recycled in a month

22,000 batteries recycled in a month

Posted: 21st February 2019

A recycling mission saw primary school children collect 22,380 batteries in just one month.

Pupils at Little Parndon Primary Academy were challenged to bring in used batteries for a whole school recycling competition.

Each class has its own bin and recycles paper, card, glass, plastic and metal, with the question often asked where old batteries should be put.

As part of the school’s commitment to recycling, it was decided to extend the recycling scheme to include batteries, starting with a competition to see who could collect the most.

The winning class – Year 3 Wiggins – filled their battery recycling jar in just one day.

Lyn Edgley, SEN co-educator, said: “The battery recycling competition was a great success and everyone enjoyed taking part.

“The competition raised awareness of how many batteries are being used and possibly going to landfill. Children and staff were amazed how many batteries we collected in a short space of time – a total of 111.9g of batteries.

“Children were told about battery recycling before Christmas and I asked them to start collecting them from home. I thought as they would have had lots of toys at Christmas, it was an ideal time to start collecting batteries.”

The battery recycling will now continue at the school.
