Year 5 are learning how to approximate numbers to the nearest 100 in Maths. Mastering rounding, pupils develop greater number sense and become more adept at estimating results in everyday situations, such as estimating the total cost of groceries or predicting travel times!

Early Reading - Phonics - Read Write Inc

At Little Parndon Primary Academy, we understand the crucial role that phonics plays in the development of reading and writing skills. To ensure our students have a strong foundation in literacy, we teach phonics from the children's first days with us through the highly effective Read Write Inc (RWI) scheme.

Read Write Inc (RWI) Scheme

The Read Write Inc (RWI) scheme is a comprehensive phonics program designed to teach children the essential skills of reading and writing. Through structured, consistent lessons and systematic instruction, children learn to recognise and produce the 44 phonemes (sounds) that form the basis of the English language. Our dedicated teachers provide consistent, high-quality instruction to ensure that every child makes excellent progress.

Phonics Screening Check (PSC)

By the end of Year 1, students are expected to complete the RWI scheme and are assessed through the statutory Phonics Screening Check (PSC). This check tests the children against 40 phonemes to determine if they have reached the "expected" standard. Achieving this milestone is a significant indicator of a child's ability to recognise and read sounds, laying the groundwork for future academic success.

Importance of Phonics

Phonics is the cornerstone of literacy. It equips children with the skills to decode words, improving their reading accuracy and fluency. As children become confident readers, their comprehension and enjoyment of reading naturally increase. This, in turn, supports their writing skills, as they learn to spell and construct sentences effectively. A strong foundation in phonics not only enhances academic performance across all subjects but also fosters a lifelong love of reading and learning.

Supporting Your Child’s Phonics Learning

We encourage parents and carers to support their child's phonics learning at home. Engaging in reading activities, practicing phonemes, and encouraging a love of books can significantly reinforce the skills taught in school. Our teachers are always available to provide guidance and resources to help you support your child’s phonics journey. In addition, you will be sent regular videos for you and your child to share together as they go through their phonics journey.

Finally, throughout the year we offer Phonics workshops for parents. These are announced through the newsletter and via ParentPay. If your child is undertaking phonics, we strongly recomend you attend these supportive workshops.

At Little Parndon Primary Academy, we are committed to ensuring that every child becomes a confident, capable reader and writer. Through the Read Write Inc scheme and our dedicated approach to teaching phonics, we aim to give all our students the best possible start in their literacy education.
