In a PE class for Year 4, students participate in a short dance routine as a warm-up activity. Incorporating dance into PE classes as a warm-up exercise can be a fun and engaging way to get students moving.

Behaviour & Attitudes

At Little Parndon Primary Academy, we hold high expectations for the behaviour and attitudes of all stakeholders, including students, staff, and parents. We believe that positive relationships are foundational to supporting good behaviour and fostering an environment where every child can thrive.

Our Therapeutic Approach to Behaviour

Our school embraces a therapeutic approach to behaviour management, incorporating Trauma Perceptive Practice (TPP) and the Essex STEPS framework. These inclusive approaches, developed by Essex County Council, focus on understanding and addressing the underlying causes of behaviour. Our vision is to promote and teach behaviours that enable all children to develop socially, academically, and personally within a positive, safe environment.

High Standards and Positive Relationships

We are committed to maintaining high standards in behaviour and attitudes to learning. We believe that every child has the right to learn in a supportive environment, and every teacher has the right to teach without disruption. This statement is fundemental to what we do. Positive relationships between staff, students, and parents are crucial in achieving this goal. By fostering mutual respect and understanding, we create a community where everyone feels valued and motivated to succeed.

Consistency and Internal Discipline

Our approach to behaviour management emphasises consistency and the teaching of internal discipline rather than imposing external discipline. We focus on helping children understand the impact of their actions and encouraging them to make positive choices. This involves:

  • Teaching Self-Discipline: Encouraging students to develop self-control and take responsibility for their actions.
  • Consistency: Ensuring that behavioural expectations are clear and consistently applied across the school.
  • Consequences, Not Punishment: Using consequences to help students learn from their mistakes and understand the importance of positive behaviour.

Supporting Behaviour through Positive Relationships

We recognise that positive relationships are at the heart of effective behaviour management. Our staff are trained to build strong, supportive relationships with students, helping them feel secure and understood. This approach not only addresses behavioural issues but also supports the overall well-being of our students. A significant factor within this is "purpose not power" (see The LPA Way).

Recognition and Reward

At LPA we recognise hard work and this includes behaviour and attitudes. When children have worked hard to make the right choices, meet expectations and model our values and drivers, we recognise them in a weekly assembly. These children come to the front of the assembly, gain a certificate and get to have hot chocolate that afternoon with a member of the senior leadership team. When they have done the same within class, they will gain a "gem in the jar", when the jar is full of gems the entire class get a reward. The reward is prechosen by the students.

Behaviour Practice

Our behaviour approach reflects our commitment to these principles. It outlines our expectations for behaviour and the strategies we use to support students in meeting these expectations. This includes:

  • Clear Expectations: Setting out the behaviour we expect from all members of our school community.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Recognising and rewarding positive behaviour to encourage students to make good choices.
  • Supportive Interventions: Providing additional support to students who need help in managing their behaviour.

By promoting high standards of behaviour and fostering positive relationships, we aim to create a school environment where every child can achieve their full potential. We thank our entire school community for their continued support and commitment to these values.
