MP visits school's new facilities

MP visits school's new facilities

Posted: 6th November 2018

Work has taken place to transform a former small classroom at Little Parndon Primary Academy into an inviting Library to entice pupils inside to find a love of reading.

A graffiti artist has breathed life into the space with Wizard of Oz and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe images emblazoned on the walls.

For children with special educational needs and disabilities, a Sensory Room is also being created at the school.

Harlow MP Robert Halfon officially opened both spaces during a visit to the school where he spent time talking with children in the new library.

He told them: “I love libraries; they are amazing. I spent a lot of time in the library growing up; I think books are incredible.

“Books are like friends and they can make your home feel really warm and cosy. Having a beautiful room like this is wonderful and you are very lucky.”

Having answered children’s questions about his role in Parliament and discussed favourite books, he said: “Little Parndon is a very, very special place. What is happening in this school is just wonderful. Every single thing has been thought about.

“To come to a school like this makes you feel inspired. What is going on here is a miracle. I go to schools a lot, but the children here are so intelligent.”

Mr Halfon also heard about the work going on in the new Sensory Room with children with additional needs.

He said: “The Sensory Room will make such a difference to a whole lot of children with difficulties. It’s a beautiful place.”

Kirstie Clark, Head of School, “The new Library has been completely transformed and looks fantastic. The space we had for the library previously was too small and was not inviting. We want pupils to want to pick up a book and feel comfortable going into the library to relax and read. This space will give them enjoyment around reading.

“What was the library is now a Sensory Room. We have never had a dedicated space for children with special educational needs to go to to explore their senses. It’s really important for children with needs to be able to go somewhere to have that space and time. Previously, we would take children outside or to the Games Trail to give them what they needed.

“Now, we have a facility to give children what they need in school. It’s a quiet space which can be used by all children to go to, to reflect and have time to themselves.”

Pupils will be timetabled to spend regular time in the Sensory Room.

Mrs Clark said: “We have got incredible knowledge across our Staff about special educational needs. Now, with these facilities, we really can provide everything the children need.”
